UPCOMING HOUSE BILL VOTES

March 28, 2024

Below is an email from the GA GOP chairman Josh McKoon. We draw your attention to the middle of the text below to find the links for each bill. Use the "My Voter Page" link to find your legislators and tell them how you feel re: these bills. If election integrity is important to you please urge your legislators to vote FOR these bills.

Dear Members of the Georgia GOP,

I hope this message finds you well. We are at a critical juncture in our efforts to ensure the integrity of our elections here in Georgia. The hard work of many dedicated individuals, including 6th District Chairman Brad Carver, Fulton District Attorney candidate Courtney Kramer, and our Election Confidence Task Force, has brought us to the final stages of pushing essential election integrity reform through the legislature. House Bills 974, 976, 977, and 1207 and Senate Bill 189 have all made the House and Senate Rules Calendars for the final two days of session.

However, we face formidable opposition from Stacey Abrams and Fair Fight, who are mobilizing their grassroots to oppose these crucial bills before they even reach the floor. We cannot afford to let their efforts succeed. That's why we need your immediate help to ensure that elections remain safe and secure in Georgia.

I urge you to take action today by contacting your Representative, Senator, or any Republican legislators you know at the Legislature. If you're unsure who your legislators are, you can find them here at My Voter Page. Please express your strong support for the following bills through phone calls, texts, and emails, with particular emphasis on HB 976, which Fair Fight is prioritizing to defeat:

  • HB 974: This bill mandates that ballots be printed on security paper and initiates the process of phasing out QR codes. Instead, scanners will read the text on ballots. It also enhances resolution for scanned ballots and establishes new standards for risk-limiting audits.

  • HB 976: This bill defines a point of residence for homeless individuals in each county to protect their voting rights and prevent them from being exploited by vote harvesters. It also improves procedures and rules for voter challenges to ensure the integrity of our voter rolls.

  • HB 977: This bill sets specific dates for special elections and requires that tax votes be held on November ballots to prevent tax increases from being passed in low-turnout elections.

  • HB 1207: This bill mandates that election workers must be U.S. citizens. It allows candidates to qualify if no one qualified during the initial period and permits the verification of ballots before election day. Additionally, it expands the abilities and protections for poll watchers.

  • SB 189: This bill enables counties with smaller populations to conduct paper ballot elections and requires that text, rather than QR codes, be counted. It also mandates that absentee ballots be counted on Election Day and allows political parties to monitor the mail-in ballot count.

  •

We have only 72 hours left to ensure these bills make it across the finish line. Your active participation is crucial. If you're able, please also consider joining us at the Capitol today and Thursday to show your support in person.

Together, we can uphold the integrity of our elections and ensure that every Georgian's vote counts. Thank you for your dedication and swift action in this critical moment.

Warm regards,

Josh McKoon

Chairman, Georgia Republican Party

A 2nd CALL TO ACTION. CONTACT MEMBERS OF PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE REGADING HB1105

This second call to action involves urging members of the Public Safety Committee to vote "Yes" on HB1105 so no other Georgia resident will suffer the fate of young Lakin Riley.

Sadly, we were all made aware of the senseless and needless murder of Lakin at the hands of an illegal immigrant living in Athens, GA. A summary of the bill is as follows: A BILL to be entitled an Act to amend Title 42 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to penal institutions, so as to require the commissioner of corrections to report certain information regarding the immigration status, offenses, and home countries of persons who are confined under the authority of the Department of Corrections; to provide for standard procedures for intake and booking of aliens and foreign nationals; to provide for quarterly reports by jailers regarding foreign born inmates; to provide for penalties; to provide for related matters; to provide for a short title; to provide an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

This summary and the entire 8-page bill can be read at Georgia HB1105.

A big shout out to Denise Burns and the six Republican representatives who sponsored this bill (who are also listed the link above.) The bill is currently in the Public Safety Committee. Please use the link below to find and use the phone numbers and email addresses of those committee members and urge them to pass HB1105.

UPDATE ON HB986 (now SB986) -2/26/24
Unfortunately HB986 passed the GA House with a vote of 148-22 in favor of the bill. It is now moving to the Georgia Senate.

On the face of it, the bill appears to be aimed at stopping AI-generated campaign videos and images in the days before an election. However, it is also vague enough to be used in a partisan manner to punish Republican, Conservative and/or MAGA supporters who seek to support their candidate. The Georgia State Freedom Caucus states:

Lines 33-60 of the bill stipulate what is considered a punishable offense and who will do the policing. Someone found in violation of this bill, if it becomes law, will be subject to a $5000 fine, minimum jail time of 2 years (to 5 years maximum) and labeled as a felon. Please read the text of the bill here. It is 8 pages long. HB986 (2/22/24)

Please use the link below to find your state senator so you can contact them and urge them to vote "NO" on SB986. Find Your Senators and Representatives.

URGENT CALL FOR ACTION REGARDING HB986; VOTE IS 2/22/24.

The Georgia Freedom Caucus is urging residents to contact their state representatives and urge them to vote "NO" on HB986.  Mallory Staples, Director of Georgia's Freedom Caucus stated the following

"This bill would make it a felony with 2-5 years in prison for someone to publish, broadcast, stream or upload a video recording, video file, audio recording, or audio file, or still image within 90 days of an election that is perceived to be deceptive by means of appearing to be real when it is not. For simpler terms, it would be illegal to post a deepfake or digitally altered image within 90 days of an election if powers at be claimed it to be intentionally deceiving and having interfered in an election.

Infringing on free speech, regardless of how many parameters you put on it, is a HARD NO. We have seen it very clearly with Fanni Willis this year that it is essential to not create avenues for power to be abused because it then certainly will be."
